The Importance of Flea and Tick Prevention

Warmer weather is in full swing here in the Nashville area. This means it’s time for preventing fleas and ticks, pet owners! External parasites that can cause extreme discomfort, fleas and ticks are just about everywhere you go in the outdoors. Not only do these pets cause skin irritations, but they can also lead to other problems. These include transmitting parasites and bacterial diseases to humans.

While you typically have to check your pets for ticks, you will know if your dog or cat has fleas by repetitive scratching. If you have noticed incessant scratching, 5 Points Animal Hospital can help your pet. However, we strongly recommend that you use flea and tick control products all year round to prevent this situation. We would like to tell you more about how you can keep fleas and ticks from bothering your pets this summer.

FLEA PREVENTION

Fortunately, there are many products available that are easy to use that safely and effectively control fleas. According to Vet Street, the majority of these products are available in a pill form. This can be given to your pet orally. In addition, there is a liquid that can be applied to your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades or on the back of the neck. Some of these preventive medications are only effective against adult fleas and others can also target the eggs and larvae stages. 5 Points Animal Hospital may recommend a combination of treatments for your pet. Has your pet has been severely infested with fleas? If so, you will need to take further action to successfully end the infestation. We strongly suggest thoroughly vacuuming your home, throwing out pet bedding, and laundering your own bedding!

TICK PREVENTION

Most of the flea prevention products also help to deter ticks. However, there are a couple of things you can do to keep ticks off of your dog or cat. One of the best ways to prevent ticks? Stay away from heavily wooded areas and from places with tall grasses, as these are popular habitats for ticks! Keep your yard from becoming a tick-friendly zone by cutting back bushes and regularly mowing your lawn. You may need to treat your yard with a pesticide, if you live in an area that is known for ticks.

Does your pet have access to a wooded or grassy area? If so, you should make a habit of checking him or her for ticks on a daily basis. When you find a tick, the best way to remove it is to grasp it with a pair of tweezers as closely to its mouth-parts as possible until the tick lets go. 5 Points Animal Hospital can also remove ticks if you have any problems.

Remember that you should never use flea and tick preventative products made for dogs on your cat, or vice versa. Contact us at 5 Points Animal Hospital for all of your flea and tick prevention needs!
